Green Juice:
The Best Coffee Replacement You’ll Ever Find
A few years back, I tried my first green juice.
I believe it consisted of cucumber, celery, romaine, a little flat leaf parsley and a little lacinato kale.
A friend made that juice for me, and he knew what he was doing. The juice tasted smooth, a little sweet and totally delicious. It had none of the dirty grainy edge I thought it would have.
A few interesting things happened soon after I drank that first glass of green juice.
First off, I had to dash to the bathroom with little time to spare. My body cleaned itself out completely, and it felt amazing afterward.
Secondly, I had a ton of energy. I’m not a coffee drinker, but the green juice gave me a much higher and healthier-feeling rush than any cup of coffee ever had.
Why don’t more people know about this? Why don’t people realize that there is this amazing type of juice that you can drink that not only leaves you feeling healthy and balanced but also gives you an incredible rush of energy that coffee can’t even begin to compete with?
I’m here to persuade you to give green juice a serious go. It is amazing, and I hope you find that it can be a super healthy addition to your regular diet.
Mix and Match These Five Ingredients
and Take Flight with Green Juice
Those ingredients I mentioned above are all you need to get started with green juice:
- Celery
- Cucumber
- Romaine Lettuce
- Parsley (flat leaf or curly)
- Kale (regular green kale or lacinato kale)
These ingredients work together to create an unbelievably powerful green juice. It tastes amazing, it smooth and easy to drink and leaves you feeling super energized, light and clean.
Use copious quantities of celery and cucumber. Three or four stalks of celery and one small to medium cucumber can form the base of your green juice.
If you don’t like one of those, then leave it out and use more of the other. You are totally free to experiment and discover your favorite type of green juice.
Keep the celery and cucumber off to the side until you’ve juiced the other ingredients. Although these are the base of your juice, add them last so they can push everything else through your juicer’s mechanism (unless you’re using one of the top shelf juicers designed specifically to juice tough greens).
Next, take about half a head of Romaine lettuce. Peel off lots of the leaves, wash them thoroughly until they’re totally clean and then put them through your juicer.
As you juice the greens, you can put in occasional chunks of cucumber or half-stalks of celery to help keep things moving.
Next, add the parsley and/or kale. A little of these ingredients goes a long way.
Take, say, a small handful of the parsley and three or four stalks of kale and put them into your juicer.
Now, make sure that all of this juice is going through a strainer on its way to your waiting container. Green juice is at its best when all the grainy bits have been removed. Your strainer’s job is to subtract any bits of plant matter so you’ll be left with a tall, smooth and delicious glass of green juice at the end.
If you’re feeling adventurous, you can add a small chunk of ginger in with these ingredients for a green juice with a little kick.
Once you’ve juiced all of these ingredients and strained them, you’re ready to have one of the healthiest beverages known to humankind. Why is green juice such a secret?
Why Green Juice Remains
the Best-Kept Secret of the Health World
Here’s my theory as to why green juice is such a secret hidden right out in the open:
- It Tastes Like Health
Let’s be honest: most drinks taste better than green juice at first glance. Our taste buds have been conditioned by foods that have been engineered to appeal to our taste buds in a very superficial way. Cake tastes better than salad. That’s just the world we live in.However, if you give yourself a chance to push through what your mind currently believes is good tasting, you’ll arrive in a totally different landscape of flavor appreciation. Just as your taste preferences have evolved as you have grown from a little kid into an adult, you are still capable of evolving what you find delicious. Commit to the appreciation of the many flavor overtones present in green juice.
Learn to taste for health rather than for short-term fireworks of sweetness and fat. Green juice is incredible once you figure out the perfect mix of different elements.
- It’s Inconvenient
If you make your own green juice at home, it simply takes a while.First you have to clean all the ingredients. Then, you have to set up your juicer. Then, you have to actually feed all the ingredients through the juicer. Next, it’s time to strain everything, which takes time to do right.
Finally, you have to clean up and the mess can be pretty intense since some juicers aren’t exactly easy to clean.
Add all that up, and you’ve just spent 15 or 20 minutes making your tall glass of green juice. In an age of convenience, green juice isn’t convenient unless you’re going to a juice bar and paying someone else a sizable chunk of money to make your juice for you.
- It Requires Special Equipment
Not just any juicer can whip up a great green juice. You’ll need one of the better juicers out there, and these juicers cost well over $100.We don’t think much of spending hundreds of dollars on televisions, computers, cars, refrigerators and furniture. But for some reason, investing in an appliance that can totally support and revolutionize our health is harder to justify. Why is that?
Consider how much cheaper it is to buy the best juicer on the market than it is to develop a preventable disease because you’re eating unhealthy foods for years and years.
Save up and invest in a great juicer and that investment will repay itself over and over and over.
- Green Juice is Expensive
A can of Coke costs a dollar. A glass of green juice will cost you much more.If you’re juicing organic vegetables, well, forget it. You’re looking at $5 for a tall glass of green juice.
Why are unhealthy choices subsidized and made so cheap while healthy choices force us to pay much more? We live in an upside down world in many ways.
However, the extra expense is worth it. And you can always figure out ways to reduce the cost if you’re smart about it. Maybe you can join a CSA and make a deal with a local farmer where you both win: they get a steady stream of income from your large juicing purchases, and you get great fresh local produce at a discount.
Or you can buy certain ingredients by the case from your local grocer for a discount.
Or you can shop at Asian grocery stores or Costco or any of a number of other options where you live. If you do a little research and set things up right, juicing doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg.
And, as always, consider the long-term costs associated with unhealthy eating habits.
Green juice is one of the best health insurance packages you can buy.
Those are the big reasons why green juice remains such a secret. Don’t fall for them, though. Green juice is pound-for-pound the most powerful thing you can consume and the most bang for your buck you can get when it comes to improving your health massively from one small new habit.
