The signs of detox range from subtle and easily tolerable things like a white or yellow tongue, bad breath and mild fatigue right on to more intense signals like headaches, stomach cramps, vomiting, intense bouts of crying or inescapable full-body fatigue.

It should go without saying that detoxing isn’t all smiles and roses.

However, we need to learn to love the challenges that arise as we detox, because the process is helping us. You just have to know that what you’re doing is healthy and moving you in a positive direction.

For this reason, don’t embark on a serious juice diet without the supervision of a qualified doctor. (Not every doctor will support your fasting efforts, however. So take care to find one who gets what you’re doing at least enough to help you through it.)

Here, then, are some guidelines for you to keep in mind as you navigate the juice diet and its attendant detox side effects.

You Are In Control of How Much Detoxing You Go Through

First off, no matter where you are in your juice diet journey, remember that you are in control.

If your detox symptoms get too intense, simply increase the amount of juice you’re drinking. Make that juicer thicker. Add in some more apples or carrots to get that sweet support you know you love.

There’s no reason for you to suffer through this: you’re in control, so only take on as much detoxing as you can handle at any given time.

Know How to Recognize Detox Symptoms

Knowing that detox symptoms are coming is half the battle. That way, you won’t be surprised when, five days into your juice diet, you wake up with a splitting headache or have a bout of fever and chills the afternoon of Day Three.

Detoxing happens. It’s part of the program.

You’ll likely have some unpleasant feelings during your juice diet at some point. You’ll likely experience some cravings for random foods, many of which won’t be healthy.

You may cry. You may feel really bad and not want to get out of bed.

All of this is normal.

You may even feel light-headed. You might come close to fainting if you get up too fast.

Once, when I was fasting on only water after already having done seven days of only juice, I thought I was dying when I was really just standing up too fast. It took me three or four times to realize that fasting on just water is a whole different animal from the juice diet.

The good news for you is that you’re hopefully just doing a juice fast. So your symptoms will be lighter and more manageable. This is a good thing.

If you feel like you have a cold or flulike symptoms and you’re on a cleanse, well, that’s the cleanse doing its job.

Your job is to rest, focus on the positive and gratefully give your body the rest it needs to do its detoxing work.

When In Doubt, Rest

A juice diet is a powerful chance for your body to clean itself. It’s a fantastic opportunity for you to make positive changes in your life.

And all of that powerful inner change requires a lot of energy, which you’re not taking in via eating solid foods as you normally would be.

For this reason, you need to rest much more than you’re probably used to resting while you’re doing the juice diet. Juice diet detox symptoms come and go in waves. You have to learn to ride those waves with courage and determination.

Rest is your friend when you’re doing the juice diet. The more rest you can give yourself, the better.

This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get out and exercise. By all means, get outside. Walk around. Get some fresh air. Exercise lightly. Walking is great, swimming is fantastic. Just don’t overdo it.

But be sure to rest as well. You may need more sleep than normal during the diet. You may need to take naps throughout the day.

Rest! Rest is the way your body repairs itself each night. When you’re on a cleanse, rest is the key to giving your body the time and space it needs to do its all-important self-healing. And when you’re resting, your detox symptoms will pass through you while you lay low and conserve your energy. No matter whether you have a headache or a sudden bout of sadness come out, rest is always a great response to the juice diet detox symptoms that arise.

Detox Symptoms Mean You’re Getting Healthier

When you do your first cleanse, you may not trust the process. That trust comes after you’ve gone through it and come out the other side.

The sooner you can reorient your take on detox symptoms, the more you’ll be able to drop your resistance and enjoy the joyous ride of a good cleanse.

When detoxing is happening and you’re aware of it (likely because you’re feeling a little off, sick or in mild pain), then that’s a great thing. You’re getting better! You’re ridding yourself of excess baggage.

You may not be able to smile in the face of strong detox symptoms the first time you do a cleanse, but soon enough you’ll be through the lows and on to higher highs than you’ve likely experienced in a while.

Detox symptoms are your friend: they’re a sign that what you’re doing is working.

Hy, i was wondering what do i do after my detox cleanse? As regards introducing food again, my friend just asked me and said i need to take care of my kidneys and liver when i eat solids again, i’m on my 4th day of juice/diet/detox. Is there a section on your site about this? Honestly, i hadn’t thought about this in a serious way, i was just going to gently bring in 1 small meal during the day, of brown rice and vegetables to begin with, is my friend worrying too much? I would appreciate your advice, thank you. Kind regards Shaishannah :-)

Thank you SO MUCH for this! It was just what I needed to read! I am in the midst, at day 5, of some gnarly flu symptoms, and I just want to cry all the time! My tongue is burning at the back, and I have a pain in my left side. I will drink more juice, and I will try to remember that this too will pass. Thank you again!

Good for you, L! Keep going and for sure the healing crises pass — and you feel even better afterwards!
