We all know we should eat healthier. But how?

Juicing is one incredible answer to that question. By making your own juices from fresh fruits and vegetables, you can radically enhance your health while having fun as well.

Juice is amazing! It tastes great, and if you’re willing to try some new things, you might find that you’re even able to come to love the taste and positive impact of drinking vegetable juices made from dark leafy greens.

Given that worldwide obesity has more than doubled in the last 30 years, few things matter as much as following a healthy lifestyle and taking care of your health on a daily basis through the foods that you eat, how much exercise you get and the quality of the rest you give your body.

The juice diet is an extraordinary gift to humanity. With it, we can hit a reset button on our health and get back on track living a vibrant life of health and fun.

Ready to get started? First, let’s look at one of the best aspects of the juice diet.

It Just Feels Good

I don’t have a dramatic story regarding juicing. I consider myself lucky to have been healthy all my life aside from a few minor illnesses here and there.

One of the reasons that’s the case is that I have been health-conscious since I was a teenager.

I first encountered juicing as a serious health practice when I was living in Brooklyn, New York. This was just at the turn of the new millennium. I converted my passion for health and healthy eating into a job working at one of the largest food cooperatives in the world–the Park Slope Food Coop.

The Park Slope Food Coop is a hotbed of health fanatics and community, and I drank up this community as much as I could.

There were always people talking about a new diet fad or discussing the health benefits of strange fruits and vegetables I’d never head of before.

Juicing, fasting, raw foods, local foods, macrobiotic eating, cleansing–basically every diet fad passed through the Coop in one form or another, and I was working right alongside health food masters. People who had cured serious illnesses through their use of health diet, exercise and various stress reduction tactics.

My Juicing Experiments Start Slowly

I don’t know when I first had a fresh juice, but I immediately recognized that fresh-made juices were totally delicious and tasted incredibly healthy. My body loved the swift intake of nutrients, and my taste buds enjoyed the potent flavor combinations possible when you mix various fresh fruits and veggies.

However, it wasn’t until I was living in an apartment with some avid green juicers that I really started to appreciate the power of juicing as a means of feeling healthy, shedding weight and detoxing.

Green juice is exactly what it sounds like–juice made predominantly from greens that appears extremely green when you make it. Most people recoil when you show them the deep dark green results of a bout of green juicing. And the taste can indeed be a little intense for many. You haven’t tasted down and dirty bitterness until you’ve juiced some serious greens with very little in the way of fruit or mild-tasting vegetables to cut it.

However, when I got into a regular rhythm of making a green juice in the morning each day, I noticed that green juice was like all the best aspects of coffee with none of the drawbacks. I felt incredibly energized, clear, happy and light. My bowels were moving like clockwork. And I grew to love the taste of my daily dark green juice.

The Positives Outweigh the Challenges

As weird or downright nasty as a fresh-made vegetable juice can taste to you initially, once you start noticing the powerful health benefits accompanied by drinking the juice, the flavor starts to grow on you.

What initially tasted gross starts to taste sweet and smooth.

What caused you to feel a little nauseated at the beginning later launches you into a clean high-flying energetic high that never crashes you back down to Earth.

The positives of juicing and following a juice diet for shorter periods far outweigh whatever negatives you might associate with juicing. The costs are far cheaper than getting sick or dying of a debilitating disease later on. The time it takes to juice isn’t that much once you get into your rhythm and master the operation of your particular juicer. And the annoyance of having to stay stocked up on fresh veggies and fruits really isn’t that big of a deal once you get over your dependence on readily available highly unhealthy fast food.

How to Get Into Juicing

I don’t recommend that you jump cold turkey into a juice diet unless you’re really motivated to make it work despite its challenges.

Instead, if you’re a normal person looking to experience more health, I recommend you ease into juicing by finding a cheap juicer and making a few juice recipes.

Don’t buy the most expensive juicer on the block straight out. Don’t even buy a new juicer if you can help it. Basically, I’ve noticed a very consistent pattern among would-be juicing humans: they get all excited and jump on the juicing bandwagon by buying a bright shiny new juicer. They make juices for a few days. Then, those juices trail off to once every week or so. And soon enough, the juicer is gathering dust and falling into disuse.

Don’t be one of these people with great aspirations who then fails to follow through.

If you want to get into juicing, hunt your local craigslist pages, classifieds and neighborhood yard sales. Find a used juicer of almost any brand. Commit to making juice every day or at least five or six days a week for a couple months. If, after two or three months, you’re hooked on juicing, then upgrade to a really good juicer and get serious about taking on a serious juice fast.

Of course, if you’re highly motivated and really want to get to know the positive impacts of juicing on your health as soon as possible, then consider following this course: get a used juicer. Commit to a 10-day juice fast. Push through the detox symptoms, cravings and temptation to quit.

After 10 days, notice how you feel.

At that point, if you’ve received some benefit from the fasting process, you’ll likely be a convert to the incredible practice of making fresh vegetable juice right in the comfort of your own kitchen.

    I will quit smoking the same day I start juicing. I’m HIGHLY motivated and have been researching this past month, and juicing is the route I’m taking to health. I’ve added 30-45 min walks daily with my dog too. My question is, what is your advice on quitting all of my bad habits at once? I’m aware of possible “syptoms” and “sideffects”, what about medically? Can you over do it? Thank you for your input.

    I am thinking about starting a juice diet – more for health than for weight loss, but that would be helpful also. How much juice do you consume? Do you simply drink juice when you’re hungry?
